Russia, China Veto US Draft Resolution On Sanctions Against Iran At Security Council

Both countries voiced strong opposition to the so-called “snapback mechanism” for restoring international sanctions against Iran.

NEW YORK, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 17th Sep, 2026) Russia and China vetoed a US draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council on extending the mandate of the committee monitoring sanctions against Iran.

According to a Security Council report, the two permanent council members had opposed the draft when its text was presented in late August.

Both countries expressed strong reservations and opposition to the so-called “snapback mechanism” for restoring international sanctions against Iran.

The mechanism, established under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), allows any party to the agreement to trigger the restoration of sanctions if it believes Iran is violating any provision of the deal.

Russia and China argued that the snapback mechanism has become ineffective because the JCPOA and UN Security Council Resolution 2231 expired at the end of last year.
