ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 15th Sep, 2026) The Federal government has decided to impose a smart lockdown to reduce fuel consumption amid rising petroleum prices. The move aims to limit mobility and decrease the use of petroleum products.
According to sources, several proposals regarding the smart lockdown were reviewed at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The meeting considered a proposal for public and private offices to operate for only four days a week, with holidays on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
A rotational attendance formula for government employees was also discussed, under which employees from different departments would work according to a fixed schedule to reduce office attendance and daily travel requirements.
The meeting also considered grounding approximately 50 percent of government vehicles to reduce their use.
The government aims to save fuel as well as cut public expenditure.
According to sources, a final decision on the smart lockdown is expected this evening, after which the details of the new policy and its implementation mechanism may be announced.
