PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 15th Sep, 2026) The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to amend the Police Act 2017. According to sources, a draft amendment has been prepared to give the province the authority to appoint the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Sources said that under the amendment, the chief minister would also have the authority to appoint and transfer Regional Police Officers (RPOs) and District Police Officers (DPOs), similar to the bureaucracy.
The proposed amendments would also establish a Public Safety Commission to oversee policing.
Provincial Law Minister Aftab Alam said that improvements were being made to the Police Act 2017. He said policing is a provincial subject and not a Federal responsibility.
He added that checks and balances over the police were being improved to prevent the misuse of authority.
The provincial law minister said the Peshawar High Court had taken away the province’s authority over the transfer of RPOs and DPOs through an unconstitutional decision.
He said police powers were not being reduced but further improved.
It may be recalled that the Peshawar High Court had struck down the amendments concerning the posting and transfer of RPOs and DPOs and returned the powers to the inspector general.
