The Constitution requires interest to be abolished, but the government should explain what has been done to achieve this, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said at a press conference in Karachi.
KARACHI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 15th Sep, 2026) Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has said that the Constitution requires interest to be abolished.
Addressing a press conference in Karachi, he asked what had been done to eliminate interest.
He said the Monetary Committee retained the interest rate the previous day, calling the decision a crime.
Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said Pakistan’s people were bearing the burden of loans and that the government was unwilling to reduce the policy rate.
He urged the government to correct its policies and lower the policy rate.
He also called for reducing extravagant spending and presenting the government’s accounts before the nation, saying that a secretary receives 20 lakh rupees for each meeting.
The Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan emir said officials stayed in five-star and seven-star hotels, adding that the money belonged to the poor.
He said the only way to stop the march was to abolish the petroleum levy.
The government says that if the levy is abolished, funds would not be available. Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said the failure to generate revenue was due to the Federal board of Revenue’s incompetence and urged the government to stop billions of rupees in corruption at the FBR.
