The Prime Minister’s inquiry committee found a strong possibility that the fire started in the power supply cable of AC No. 2, with no evidence of sabotage or an IESCO fault.
ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 15th Sep, 2026) A fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad was caused by an electrical fault, according to the inquiry report of the committee formed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, a private tv channel reported.
The committee declared the failure of the PIMS administration as established.
According to the report, there is a strong possibility that the fire started in the power supply cable of AC No. 2.
No evidence of sabotage or an IESCO fault was found, while there was also no proof that the fire was caused by an oxygen leak or an incubator.
The report said frontline staff took immediate action in the initial moments after the fire broke out.
No criminal offence was established against any individual.
It said the nursery lacked an effective system for detecting smoke automatically and raising alarms. A fire at the nursing hostel on July 6 had also exposed shortcomings, but earlier fire-safety warnings were not implemented.
According to the report, 15 newborns were receiving treatment in the nursery and 14 died in the incident.
The nursery was treating more newborns than its capacity, with 15 babies in a 10-bed unit. The report said the newborns died not because of a failure of the safety system alone, but due to multiple inadequate measures.
The committee recommended further investigations into the electrical installation, emergency exits and warnings.
It also recommended immediate fire, life-safety and electrical audits at PIMS. The report proposed developing special emergency evacuation SOPs for newborns and immediately activating fire detection, alarm and exit systems.
