According to a US broadcaster, speaking to reporters before a rally for the midterm elections in Kansas City, Missouri, the vice president said the US government was currently in direct contact with the Houthis.
However, he did not provide further details about the nature or location of the contact or the people involved in the talks.
JD Vance said the United States was also maintaining constant contact with the UAE, Saudi Arabia and other countries affected by developments in the region.
The vice president expressed particular concern over the Houthis’ control of Mayyun Island, which is located close to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and holds major strategic importance for monitoring the maritime route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
It may be recalled that the Houthis in Yemen have rapidly advanced in coastal areas along the Red Sea and strengthened their hold over key areas and islands around Mokha and Bab el-Mandeb.
Earlier, US media had claimed that the Saudi crown prince spoke by telephone with President Donald Trump and requested direct airstrikes against the Houthis.
However, the US president refrained from launching direct military action against the Houthis and agreed only to provide Saudi Arabia with intelligence and assistance in identifying targets.
According to the report, following the conversation, the commander of US Central Command, CENTCOM, arrived in Saudi Arabia on an immediate visit and held a special meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The meeting discussed the situation arising after the Houthi attack.
The Houthis have so far neither confirmed nor denied US Vice President JD Vance’s claim.
