LAHORE, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 5th Sep, 2026) The Punjab Police have decided to restructure its Internal Accountability Branch (IAB) to strengthen transparency, accountability and action against corruption in line with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
A meeting chaired by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab reviewed measures to give the IAB a more effective and central role in addressing departmental corruption, misconduct and other irregularities.
Under the proposed mechanism, the DIG (IAB) will personally review complaints against sub-inspectors and officers of higher ranks on a daily basis. Regional SPs will personally conduct inquiries into allegations of corruption, corrupt practices and other irregularities involving the officers concerned. Such inquiries will not be transferred to the respective districts or regions.
The meeting also decided that complaints previously disposed of on the grounds of “Not Willing to Pursue” would be reopened and, where necessary, formal inquiries would be initiated.
Complaints relating to police investigations will be marked at the SP level for necessary action, while departmental proceedings resulting from IAB inquiries will be closely monitored to ensure effective implementation of decisions.
The IG Punjab directed the restoration of the post of AIG Inquiries and called for the vacant posts of Regional SPs and DSPs to be filled on a priority basis. He also ordered increased funding and budgetary support for the IAB.
The branch will be given greater financial and administrative autonomy to enable its officers to perform their responsibilities independently of field formations.
The meeting reaffirmed the Punjab Police’s commitment to enforcing a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and strengthening internal accountability mechanisms to improve transparency and public confidence in the force.
