ISLAMABAD, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 4th Sep, 2026) NDMA Expert Zahra Hassan on Friday said the second-last monsoon spell would continue over northern areas, particularly the northern Potohar region, parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, till September 6.
While speaking with a local media channel, she said the intensity of the current spell would persist till Friday night before gradually weakening. More than 200 millimetres of rainfall has been recorded in Rawalpindi and Islamabad during the recent rains, she added.
The Expert said a heatwave situation is expected to develop after September 6, with temperatures likely to rise sharply on September 7-9, particularly in Sindh, southern Punjab and the northern areas.
The final monsoon spell is expected after September 10-11, she said, adding that its intensity is likely remain lower than the current spell.
On glacial hazards, Zahra Hassan said the number of monitored glacial lakes has increased from 33 last year to around 60 this year, with the number exceeding 100 at some locations.
She pointed out that NDMA has conducted a comprehensive remote-sensing analysis and has identified sites vulnerable to glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), categorising areas into high, moderate and low-risk zones.
The assessment would also help identify locations for evacuation and the establishment of relief camps, she added.
She further noted that NDMA has coordinated with national and international organisations, including Chinese institutions and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), to strengthen glacier monitoring, early warning and disaster preparedness systems.
