ISLAMABAD, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 2nd Sep, 2026) Punjab Minister for Information and Culture Azma Bokhari on Wednesday said around 200mm of rain was recorded in the twin cities, breaking the rainfall record of recent years.
Speaking to a local news channel, she said despite the heavy downpour, rainwater was drained within two to three hours due to the prompt response of the Punjab government and WASA.
She said heavy downpours in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad caused a flood-like situation in low lying areas as Nullah Lai over flooded.
She added that Punajb Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif had provided over Rs 60 million to Rawalpindi for desilting and cleaning.
Azma Bokhari said WASA staff and machinery remained on high alert throughout the rainfall which began around 3:30 a.m.
She said a local holiday was also announced to prevent traffic problems and inconvenience to schoolchildren.
She appreciated the efforts of WASA and other departments, saying normal life resumed within a few hours despite the record rainfall.
