MULTAN, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 24th Aug, 2026) The Pakistan Kissan Ittehad (PKI) demanded the government to reinstate the wheat
support price and give subsidy on all types of phosphate fertilizers after
assessment of input cost.
During a press conference here on Monday, he said that the country could face a wheat
shortage of nearly 3 million tons this year if the issue is not addressed in time.
Khokhar also pointed out that the Gulf conflict, trouble in the Strait of Hormuz, and
the Russia-Ukraine war had pushed up fertilizer and shipping costs around the world,
adding to the burden on farmers who are already paying more for diesel
and electricity to run tubewells.
The PKI said that at present, it costs a farmer Rs 3,761 to grow one maund of
wheat. Adding a fair profit of 25 per cent, the support price should be Rs 4,702 per
maund for the farming community.
The government should buy wheat directly from farmers to protect their livelihood and
the country’s food security, he said.
He said subsidy should be given on all phosphate fertilizers, not just DAP, since most farmers
also use other types like Nitrophos, TSP, SSP, MAP, NP/NPS and NPK, and that limiting the
subsidy to DAP alone could lead to black marketing and force the government to spend extra foreign
exchange on imports.
