LAHORE, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 4th Aug, 2026) The birth anniversary of prominent urdu poet, playwright, critic and columnist Amjad islam Amjad was observed with separate ceremonies held in the provincial metropolis on Tuesday to pay rich tribute to literary icon.
Amjad Islam Amjad left indelible mark on the literary scene of the country and beyond and his literary excellence was acknowledged across the globe. Though he is known for his poetry but he made an identity through some memorable screen-plays on the Pakistan Television (ptv).
Celebrated for his insightful expression, humanism and literary excellence, Amjad Islam Amjad enriched Urdu literature through poetry, drama, criticism and , leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
Born in Lahore on August 4, 1944, Amjad Islam Amjad received his early education in the provincial capital before obtaining a master’s degree in Urdu from the University of the Punjab. He began his professional career as an academic at Government Mohammadan Anglo Oriental (MAO) College, Lahore and later joined Pakistan Television (PTV). His poetry collections, columns and television dramas, particularly Waris, earned widespread acclaim and established him as a household name in the country’s literary and cultural landscape.
Amjad Islam Amjad’s poetry is admired for its simplicity, emotional richness and philosophical depth, addressing themes of love, human relationships, social values and the complexities of modern life. Throughout his illustrious career, he received numerous national and international honours, including the Pride of Performance, in recognition of his outstanding services to Urdu literature. Literary gatherings, poetry recitals and seminars are being held to commemorate his invaluable contributions and to introduce younger generations to his enduring works.
Although Amjad Islam Amjad passed away in 2023, his literary legacy continues to flourish through his timeless poetry, memorable television dramas and thought-provoking prose. Scholars and literary critics describe his work as an enduring treasure of Pakistan’s cultural heritage, emphasizing that his writings continue to shape contemporary Urdu literature and inspire readers both at home and abroad.
He was conferred multiple awards for his meritorious services in art and literature including Pride of Performance (1987) and Sitara-e-Imtiaz and Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (1988).
