Nihal Hashmi says he was honoured to distribute laptops among students and described the initiative as an important step towards expanding educational opportunities for young people
KARACHI: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-August 3rd, 2026) Sindh Governor Nihal Hashmi has claimed that young businessman Mir Raza Ali did not die by suicide and had suffered four gunshot wounds.
Speaking at a ceremony held under the Prime Minister’s Youth Laptop Programme, Nihal Hashmi said he was honoured to distribute laptops among students and described the initiative as an important step towards expanding educational opportunities for young people.
He said education and learning were fundamental to national progress, noting that the Quran begins with the command “Iqra” — meaning “read”. He added that access to laptops would enable students to benefit from modern education and acquire knowledge through technology.
The governor said Pakistan was targeting $25 billion in IT exports and praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for prioritising investment in education.
Hashmi also highlighted the success of talented Karachi students who, according to him, recently established a company that was later sold to Elon Musk for millions of Dollars. He described the achievement as a source of pride for Pakistan.
Emphasising the role of young people in national development, Hashmi urged the country’s youth to use their skills and abilities to contribute to economic growth and prosperity.
Addressing political and constitutional matters, the governor said Pakistan was established as an independent and sovereign country in accordance with the vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
He said he did not support any notion of dividing the country.
“I am a constitutional governor, not a public-elected governor,” Hashmi said, stressing that his appointment was made under the Constitution rather than through a public vote. He added that he would continue performing his duties within the constitutional framework.
The governor also called for a positive comparison between Lahore and Karachi, saying people in the two cities should learn from each other’s achievements instead of engaging in criticism.
Hashmi said the Prime Minister’s Youth Laptop Programme had reached its 10th edition, with nearly 700,000 laptops distributed among students so far. He added that the government planned to expand the scheme further next year.
Governor says investigation into Mir Raza’s death continues
Speaking about the case involving Mir Raza, Hashmi said the young man had not committed suicide and had sustained four gunshot wounds.
“This is the information available to me; the investigation into the case is continuing,” he said, adding that the death of any young person was a matter of concern.
Hashmi acknowledged the need for stronger security measures in Karachi, saying the city’s large population presented significant challenges for law enforcement.
He noted that crime levels in Karachi had been considerably higher in 2010 but had declined since then, while stressing that security arrangements still needed to be improved further.
