LAHORE, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 17th Jun, 2026) Punjab Assembly (PA) Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan on Wednesday underscored the importance of budget literacy and effective oversight of public resources, saying that a proper understanding of budget documents was essential for informed legislation and transparent governance.
Addressing a two-day Budget Literacy Workshop as chief guest, the Speaker said that effective oversight of public resources was the foundation of a strong democracy. The workshop was organized for members of the Punjab Assembly to enhance their capacity in budget analysis, financial management and parliamentary oversight.
A large number of assembly members participated in the training programme.
The Speaker said that protection of public interest could be ensured through constructive debate, transparent accountability and effective parliamentary oversight. He emphasized that strengthening the capacity of elected representatives was the need of the hour and that meaningful parliamentary scrutiny during the budget-making process promoted transparency and good governance.
During the workshop, renowned economist Prof Dr Hafiz A. Pasha delivered a detailed briefing on Punjab’s current economic situation and highlighted the importance of safeguarding investment in education, health and development sectors.
Mohsin Laghari also conducted a special session aimed at helping participants understand budget documents in a simple and practical manner.
The workshop focused on improving members’ skills in financial oversight, budget review and effective legislation, enabling them to play a more active role in ensuring the transparent, efficient and responsible use of public resources.
The Budget Literacy Workshop was organized jointly by the Punjab Assembly, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
