Suspending IWT Would Cause Greater Harm To India Itself: Governor Sindh

KARACHI, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 15th May, 2026) Governor Sindh Syed Muhammad Nihal Hashmi has said that the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) was an international agreement that could not be revoked unilaterally by any one party, warning that any attempt by India to block the flow of the Indus River would ultimately cause greater harm to India itself.

In an interview with the APP here Friday, Governor Hashmi said that if the Indian Prime Minister were properly educated on the matter, he would better understand that the Indus River has been flowing for thousands of years and will continue to flow, adding that no one can stop its natural course.

The Governor said that the Indian Prime Minister’s remarks about stopping water were merely aimed at self-satisfaction.

He further stated that there was a defined international procedure for withdrawing from such treaties, and the mechanism for review or termination under specific circumstances was clearly outlined within the agreement itself.

He added that India was not even in a position to seek a review of the treaty. Governor Hashmi challenged the Indian government to try stopping the waters of the Indus River, saying such a move would damage not only India but also have wider global consequences.

Addressing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly, Governor Hashmi advised him to act wisely, carefully read the treaty and make an effort to understand the history and geography of the region.
