ISLAMABAD, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 8th May, 2026) Transporters in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir have announced an indefinite strike starting May 12, warning that public transport across the region could come to a standstill if the BJP-led administration continues to ignore their demands.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Transport Association Kashmir President Shabir Matta told reporters in Srinagar that the decision follows continued “inaction” by authorities despite repeated outreach after the Valley-wide “chakka jam” on April 20.
“We have given the government time till May 11. If our genuine demands are not met, the entire Kashmir will observe a wheel-jam strike from May 12,” Matta said. He added that transporters from South, North, and Central Kashmir had tried to engage the administration but received no response.
“Had the government called us for talks earlier, this situation would not have arisen,” he said.
Matta said the protest is driven by survival concerns of thousands of drivers, conductors, and vehicle owners, stating that local stakeholders are being sidelined as Smart City buses expand into routes traditionally operated by private transporters.
“We are not against development, but our employment is being snatched. First save our livelihood, then we can discuss other issues,” he added.
While acknowledging hardships caused during the April 20 strike, he said transporters were being forced to intensify agitation.
Transport bodies have appealed to operators across Kashmir to support the strike, which is likely to severely disrupt daily life, affecting commuters, students, and patients.
