The FIA director says simple carelessness in sharing personal or financial information often leads to serious losses.
LAHORE: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-May 2nd, 2026) “Lack of awareness is the biggest reason people fall victim to white-collar crime,” Director FIA Lahore Capt (R) Muhammad Ali Zia said while addressing an awareness session at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Lahore.
The FIA director said simple carelessness in sharing personal or financial information often leads to serious losses. “Criminals use basic tricks to gain trust, and people must stay alert at all times,” he said, urging students to be careful in their online and financial dealings.
The session was organised to educate students and faculty about the rising threats of cybercrime, financial fraud, and other non-violent offences. Officials said such crimes are increasing due to the growing use of digital platforms and lack of public awareness.
Participants were briefed on common tactics used by criminals, including phishing emails, fake investment offers, online scams, and identity theft. The director explained that fraudsters often pretend to be trusted organisations or people to steal sensitive information. He advised students not to share passwords, banking details, or personal data with unknown sources and to always verify before responding to any suspicious message.
Highlighting the role of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Capt (R) Muhammad Ali Zia said the agency is taking proactive steps to protect citizens and national interests. He said modern tools and better systems are being used to deal with complex crimes.
He added that public cooperation is necessary, and timely reporting can help prevent further damage.
An interactive question-and-answer session was also held, where students and faculty actively engaged with the director. They asked about safety measures, complaint procedures, and how to report cybercrime. The director guided them on using official FIA channels and said that reporting suspicious activity at the right time is very important.
Officials said the FIA is holding similar sessions in educational institutions to spread awareness, especially among young people who are more exposed to online risks.
The National Institute of Technology (NIT), a federally chartered institution established under Act No VI of 2025, is positioning itself as a modern centre of learning in Pakistan. The university aims to improve higher education through practical learning and industry-focused programmes.
NIT has also partnered with Arizona State University (ASU), a leading institution in the United States known for innovation. This partnership allows students to benefit from international academic standards while staying connected to local needs.
The university promotes a student-focused environment and aims to develop graduates who can think independently and adapt to changing global markets. Its programmes focus on practical skills, industry links, and better career opportunities.
The session ended with a call for awareness and cooperation between institutions and law enforcement to reduce crime and ensure public safety.
