ISLAMABAD, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 1st May, 2026) On the occasion of Labour Day, Vice President of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Senator Sherry Rehman paid tribute to workers across Pakistan and around the world, acknowledging their tireless efforts and invaluable contributions to global progress.
In her message on Friday, she stated that the wheel of the country’s economy continued to move forward due to the hard work and dedication of labourers. She emphasized that workers remained the backbone of national development.
Sherry Rehman highlighted that the Pakistan Peoples Party had consistently been a strong voice for the rights and welfare of workers. She noted that the party had introduced multiple legislative measures, policies and practical initiatives aimed at improving the conditions of the labour force.
Recalling historical efforts, she said that Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto introduced Pakistan’s first comprehensive labour policy in February 1972 and strongly advocated for workers’ rights in the Constitution of 1973.
She further mentioned that the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) was established in 1976 to support workers after retirement.
She added that workers were also granted a share in institutional income during PPP’s tenure, reflecting the party’s commitment to economic justice.
Referring to more recent developments, Sherry Rehman stated that after the 18th Amendment, the PPP-led Sindh government introduced a provincial labour policy in 2018, aimed at ensuring protection and rights for workers in line with their entitlements.
Reaffirming her Party’s stance, she said that the Pakistan Peoples Party remained a flag bearer of labour rights and has laid the foundation for workers’ struggle and empowerment in the country.
She concluded by reiterating the Party’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the dignity, rights and welfare of workers.
