ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-May 9th, 2026) Negotiations between the United States and Iran are likely to resume in Islamabad next week as efforts continue to ease regional tensions and avert the risk of a wider conflict, according to a report published by The Wall Street Journal.
The report stated that both countries could restart dialogue in the Pakistani capital with the aim of reducing tensions in the region and preventing the possibility of war.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the US and Iran are working with mediators on a one-page, 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU). The proposed agreement would establish a one-month negotiation framework to guide future talks between the two sides.
Sources said the discussions are expected to focus on key issues including Iran’s nuclear programme, reducing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and the possible transfer of Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpiles to a third country.
However, the report noted that several important issues remain unresolved. The most significant hurdle is said to be the extent of sanctions relief for Iran, which could become a major obstacle in the negotiations process.
The newspaper further reported that if progress is achieved during the talks, both sides may agree to extend the initial one-month negotiation framework.
Earlier, the first round of discussions linked to the process was held in Islamabad on April 11, but no final agreement could be reached at that stage.
