LAHORE: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News- May 7th, 2026) Principal Post Graduate Medical Institute (PGMI) Professor Dr. Muhammad Farooq Afzal has stated that modern diagnostics, genetic testing and integrated treatment are indispensable for an effective fight against complex genetic disorders like Cystic Fibrosis. He stated that by providing timely diagnosis and proper guidance to parents, the quality of life for affected children can be significantly improved. He was addressing the inauguration ceremony of a dedicated Cystic Fibrosis Clinic and an awareness seminar organized by the Department of Pediatrics at Lahore General Hospital (LGH).
The event was attended by renowned medical experts, including Prof. Dr. Muhammad Fareeduddin (Head of Pediatrics at Indus Hospital Karachi), MS LGH Prof. Dr. Faryad Hussain and other senior medical faculty members.
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Farooq Afzal highlighted that the new clinic will provide advanced diagnostic facilities, genetic counseling, specialized physiotherapy and nutritional support. He added that the center aims to not only provide treatment but also to train parents in home-based care so they can effectively manage their children’s health. He highlighted that the Punjab Government and Health Department are committed to providing world-class medical facilities and the establishment of this clinic at LGH is a crucial step in that mission.
During the seminar, medical experts explained that Cystic Fibrosis primarily affects the lungs and digestive system, with symptoms including chronic cough, frequent chest infections and stunted growth.
Dr. Muhammad Usman Ghani discussed the vital role of genetic testing, while Prof. Dr. Muhammad Fareeduddin shared insights into international advancements in gene modulator drugs. Dr. Muhammad Asif Naeem further updated the participants on global research and best clinical practices.
The experts concluded that while a complete cure is not yet available, timely diagnosis through the Sweat Chloride Test, combined with modern medicine and physiotherapy, can enable patients to lead significantly better lives.
MS Prof. Dr. Faryad Hussain reiterated that LGH is being equipped with international-standard facilities to ensure quality healthcare for all patients.
The ceremony concluded with Prof. Dr. Nazish Saqlain thanking the participants and speakers, followed by the distribution of commemorative shields to the distinguished guests. Specialists including Dr. Houriya Rehman, Dr. Muzammil Azam, Dr. Muhammad Umair and Dr. Sundas Tahir expressed their commitment to expanding public awareness campaigns regarding Cystic Fibrosis across the province.
