Hezbollah’s fibre-optic drones emerge as new security challenge for Israel

Security analysts describe these drones as small, inexpensive devices that can be easily sourced and deployed, making them similar in appearance and simplicity to basic remote-controlled toys

DUBAI: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – May 2nd, 2026) Israeli forces deployed in southern Lebanon are facing an evolving battlefield threat as Hezbollah reportedly uses low-cost fibre-optic drones in operations that are proving difficult to counter.

The security analysts describe these drones as small, inexpensive devices that can be easily sourced and deployed, making them similar in appearance and simplicity to basic remote-controlled toys. Orna Mizrahi, a senior analyst at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), noted that such systems fall outside traditional military planning assumptions.

According to her assessment, Israel’s defence establishment appears to lack an effective countermeasure at present, largely because it did not anticipate the use of such low-tech explosive devices in modern combat scenarios.

Despite a ceasefire arrangement that has been in effect since mid-April, the Israeli military—one of the world’s most technologically advanced forces—has recently reported casualties linked to drone-based explosive attacks. At least two soldiers and a civilian contractor have been killed in separate incidents within a week, while additional personnel have been injured.

The development highlights how relatively simple and inexpensive technology is increasingly reshaping battlefield risks, even for highly equipped armies.

US President Donald Trump has reiterated warnings that Iran must be prevented from acquiring nuclear weapons, describing it as a major global security concern.

In a statement attributed to Trump, it was asserted that a nuclear-armed Iran would pose an immediate danger to multiple regions, including Israel, the broader middle East, Europe, and potentially the United States.

The remarks framed Iran’s nuclear program as a serious international red line, reinforcing calls for continued efforts to block any advancement toward nuclear weaponization.

Trump stressed that allowing Tehran to develop nuclear capability would cross a critical security threshold, arguing that such weapons could be deployed rapidly and with far-reaching consequences.
