IHC directs PM Shehbaz to fill PTA Tribunal post or appear in person

Justice Kayani has expressed concern over growing trend of appointing retired judges to tribunals, remarking that such practices have not always produced effective outcomes

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-April 28th, 2026) Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday ordered Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to ensure the appointment of a Member Finance to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority Tribunal by May 18, warning that failure to comply will require his personal appearance before the court.

IHC Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani heard the case and observed that continued delay in the appointment was unacceptable.

The judge remarked that if the position remains vacant beyond the given deadline, the prime minister must appear in court and explain the reasons for the non-appointment.

During the proceedings, an assistant attorney general informed the court that a retired judge had been appointed as a tribunal member. However, Justice Kayani expressed concern over the growing trend of appointing retired judges to tribunals, remarking that such practices have not always produced effective outcomes.

The court emphasized that timely appointments are essential for the proper functioning of tribunals and reiterated that the government must ensure compliance before the next hearing, failing which the prime minister would be summoned in a personal capacity.
