Trump rejects Iranian proposal amid stalled war and nuclear talks

US officials maintain that nuclear issues must be addressed from the outset of any negotiation process

WASHINGTON: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-April 28th, 2026) US President Donald Trump has rejected a recent Iranian proposal aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict, a US official said, underscoring continued deadlock over the war and nuclear negotiations.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity after a briefing with the president’s advisers, said that Trump was dissatisfied with Tehran’s plan, which reportedly suggests delaying discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme until after the war ends and maritime disputes in the Gulf are settled.

US officials maintain that nuclear issues must be addressed from the outset of any negotiation process.

White House spokesperson Olivia Wales said the administration would not conduct negotiations through public statements, adding that Washington has already set clear conditions for ending the conflict launched earlier this year alongside Israel.

Diplomatic efforts have recently slowed after a planned visit by US envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner to Islamabad was cancelled. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had held multiple regional meetings over the weekend, including visits to Oman and Russia, where he met President Vladimir Putin.

Iran’s 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers previously restricted its nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief, but the deal collapsed after the United States withdrew during Trump’s first term.

The latest diplomatic setback comes as tensions continue to affect global energy markets. Oil prices have risen amid concerns over supply disruptions, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a key transit route for global crude shipments.

Energy tracking data indicates a significant drop in maritime traffic through the strait, with only a fraction of normal vessel movements recorded in recent days.

Iran has condemned recent US actions targeting oil shipments linked to Tehran, describing them as unlawful seizures.

Reports suggest Iran’s proposal outlines a phased approach, beginning with a ceasefire and guarantees against renewed military action, followed by discussions on maritime access and regional security arrangements.

Only after these steps, according to Iranian officials, would nuclear negotiations take place, including discussions on uranium enrichment rights.

Despite ongoing diplomatic activity, both sides remain far apart with no immediate breakthrough in sight.
