Any response to an attack on one member will be decided by the leadership of all three countries, and the Mecca Pact does not suggest it should be called only a Muslim alliance, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry told Al Arabiya.
ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 16th Sep, 2026) Pakistan Army spokesperson Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry has clarified that the historic Mecca joint defence agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye is not aimed at confronting any country, nor does it conceal any regional or military ambitions.
In a detailed interview with Arab news organisation Al Arabiya, the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the agreement was simply a collective defence and security arrangement.
Its fundamental objective is to promote non-aggression, non-interference, lasting peace and stability in the region, and it contains no element of aggression or interference.
He said the three countries also maintain independent and historic relations with other global powers, including China.
Therefore, the alliance would serve as an alternative and supportive arrangement rather than a grouping against anyone.
He added that the Mecca Pact did not state that it should be called only a Muslim alliance; calling it an alliance for regional stability would be more appropriate, and its doors were open to other countries that believe in peace.
Asked about an attack on any one of the countries, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said the internal procedures for implementing defence agreements are not made public.
If such a situation arose, the senior political and military leadership of the three countries would decide the course of action through mutual consultation. He said all global powers, including China, were well aware that Pakistan’s ties with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye ran deep in history.
He said Pakistan was playing its role solely for peace and as an honest and active mediator.
Pakistan’s decades-old relations with the United States and its fraternal, neighbouring and strategic ties with Iran had made this mediation possible. Pakistan wanted the conflict to spread no further and believed that all disputes should be resolved through dialogue rather than land or air warfare.
Commenting on India’s purchase of modern air defence systems and weapons, the DG ISPR said Pakistan did not support an arms race or imbalance in the region.
However, he said Pakistan had complete confidence in its defence capabilities and that the Pakistan Army was fully capable of confronting any aggressor and teaching it a harsh lesson.
He also said Pakistan believed in non-interference in Afghanistan’s internal affairs, but it was concerning that the current Afghan Taliban government was being used as an easy launching pad for terrorists.
Terrorist elements were being facilitated under the Taliban government in recruiting and training new people and carrying out cross-border attacks against Pakistan, which was extremely dangerous for regional security. Pakistan remained fully committed and prepared to protect its borders and eliminate all forms of external aggression and terrorism.
