Pakistan will decide on trade agreements with Iran in its national interest, while no discussion is currently under way on expanding the Makkah Agreement, Foreign Office spokesperson says.
ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 10th Sep, 2026) The Foreign Office spokesperson said Pakistan is not currently considering any military response under the Makkah Defence Agreement to Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, adding that time would be required to implement the defence pact.
Last month, Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia signed a trilateral defence agreement under which an armed attack on any one of the three countries would be considered an attack on all of them.
Foreign Office spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan said bilateral defence cooperation between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia was continuing and that Pakistan would continue to support Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
During the weekly press briefing, Sajjad Haider Khan said the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement was in force and Pakistan would play its role in accordance with the agreement’s requirements.
He said there were currently no discussions between Pakistan and any party on any proposal or matter of this nature.
He said Saudi Arabia and Pakistan also had a bilateral defence agreement and were both parties to the trilateral agreement.
According to the spokesperson, the Makkah Agreement was purely defensive in nature and constituted a defence alliance aimed primarily at ensuring regional security through deterrence.
The spokesperson said the current Makkah Agreement included Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, which were holding regular meetings and consultations at various levels under the pact.
The three countries remained in continuous contact with one another.
He said Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia first needed to further consolidate their organisation and cooperation. Subsequently, the Makkah Agreement would be open to all countries sharing similar positions, thinking and needs; however, there was currently no discussion on expanding the agreement.
According to the Foreign Office spokesperson, the three founding countries were still finalising the details of the Makkah Agreement.
Discussions on expansion would take place after the agreement’s basic points had been settled.
