MULTAN, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 9th Sep, 2026) Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr Faisal Saleem on Wednesday said that work on the Qila Kohna Qasim Bagh mega project was progressing rapidly under the Walled City Authority to restore Multan’s centuries-old historical and cultural heritage and transform the ancient city into a modern tourism destination.
Chairing a review meeting at his office, the deputy commissioner said that several components of the mega project were nearing completion.
The meeting reviewed progress on the restoration and upgradation of Qila Kohna, Damdama, historic shrines, Langar Khana, an old library, modern cafes, food street, fortification walls, parks, landscaping and sports facilities.
Dr Faisal Saleem directed the authorities concerned to further accelerate work on the upgradation of Qila Kohna, Damdama, shrines and stadium and ensure completion of all projects within the stipulated timeframe while maintaining the highest standards of quality.
He said modern facilities should be developed without compromising the original character, historical significance and traditional architecture of the heritage buildings and monuments.
The deputy commissioner said the project aimed at preserving Multan’s historic identity while providing citizens and tourists with a beautiful, modern and internationally competitive recreational and cultural destination.
He said the Walled City Project had been launched for the restoration, preservation and protection of the historical heritage of Qila Kohna Qasim Bagh.
The project included restoration of the historic fortification wall, construction of retaining walls for soil conservation, walkways, green belts, parks, landscaping, footpaths, electrical infrastructure, removal of overhead utility lines, architectural lighting, installation of modern surveillance cameras and traffic signs.
He said the Punjab government had released additional funds of Rs 500 million during the current year to remove financial constraints and ensure speedy completion of the development work.
Dr Faisal said the fundamental objective of the Qila Kohna Qasim Bagh restoration project was to preserve the historic site in its original identity and develop it into a prominent cultural and tourism destination for both domestic and international visitors.
He said Damdama Museum, a rooftop cafe, Nigarkhana, Municipal Library and Library Cafe were among the key attractions being developed under the project.
A separate project was also underway for the restoration of the historic library, where improved seating arrangements, a modern cafe and a green environment would be provided.
He said restoration of Damdama Museum and other historic sites would highlight the historical importance of Qila Kohna while offering visitors greater opportunities for educational and recreational activities.
The deputy commissioner said Langar Khana, Food Street and modern cafeterias were also important components of the project aimed at facilitating citizens and visitors.
He added that Rs 463 million was being spent on the complete upgradation of the historic fortification wall.
Development work was also continuing to establish green belts, seasonal flower beds, plantations, walkways and seating facilities in different sections of Qila Kohna Qasim Bagh.
Special landscaping had been carried out along the historic corridor connecting the shrines of Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya and Hazrat Shah Rukn-e-Alam, while directions had also been issued to provide benches and other facilities for visitors, particularly senior citizens.
