ICELAND, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 9th Sep, 2026) Diplomatic tensions have emerged between the United States and Iceland after US President Donald Trump shared a controversial map on social media.
Trump posted the map on Truth Social without explanation, showing the United States, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico and parts of the Caribbean as a single landmass. The entire map shared by Trump was covered by the US flag and labelled the “United States of America.”
Soon after the map emerged, the Icelandic government summoned US Ambassador Billy Long to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and lodged a formal protest.
Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir said the move insulted the people of Iceland, Canada and Greenland. She said there was nothing funny or normal about mocking the sovereignty of states.
Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir also described the map as highly inappropriate, making clear that Iceland was a sovereign country and that there was no scope for any foreign claim to its territory.
