A research report has highlighted the impact of AI technology on children’s learning abilities.
ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 8th Sep, 2026) Students who do not use artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots for schoolwork perform better than those who use them, according to a new study.
A report on education issued by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) highlighted the impact of AI technology on children’s learning abilities.
The report compared the science test scores of students who avoided AI with those of 484 students who used AI chatbots.
The results showed that students who avoided AI achieved an average score of 509, while those who used chatbots scored 481.
This 28-point gap remained consistent over a period of one and a half years.
Similar results were observed in other AI-related activities, including researching a new topic and preparing summaries after reading.
Researchers said that learning does not necessarily require memorising material; instead, mental effort helps people learn new content.
They said AI technology should be used as a temporary support rather than a crutch, allowing the brain to benefit from it and helping students progress in education.
They warned that relying on AI could lead to problems.
The researchers had previously conducted similar research in 2022, when AI technology was beginning to grow rapidly in popularity.
