Naan bakers threaten a citywide strike, saying current LPG, flour and electricity prices make it impossible to sell roti at the official rate.
LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 8th Sep, 2026) The district administration has stepped up efforts to enforce prices for naan and roti. Deputy Commissioner Lahore Captain (Retd.) Muhammad Ali Ejaz directed officials to intensify inspections and ordered price control magistrates to ensure naan is sold at Rs20 and roti at Rs14.
The deputy commissioner said magistrates must remain alert to enforce prices of essential commodities, including naan and roti, fully implement the field enforcement plan to prevent overcharging, and show no leniency to those violating the prescribed rates.
He added that price monitoring in the field would be further tightened and no compromise would be made on the prices of essential commodities.
Meanwhile, naan bakers said that due to sharp increases in the prices of flour, LPG and electricity, it was impossible to provide roti at the government-prescribed rates.
They warned that if challans were forcibly issued or attempts were made to shut down tandoors, naan bakers across the city would go on strike.
According to the naan bakers’ association, gas is unavailable, forcing them to purchase expensive LPG.
They said they had sometimes bought LPG on the black market because of the Iran war, asking where the government’s enforcement agencies were at that time. They added that if the government provided flour, gas and electricity at lower rates, naan bakers were ready to sell roti for less than Rs14.
